100 years ago, 1911
Since the remarkable flight of aviator Havens at the fair grounds on Monday “aviation fever” of the worst kind has struck these two cities as well as surrounding towns. Many cases have been reported from all parts of both cities and one man said yesterday, “If Havens stays here much longer people will have their heads so high in the air they won’t know where they are walking.” Those who have been unable to attend the fair have been fortunate to catch a glimpse of the machine as it sailed over Lewiston.
50 years ago, 1961
The Lewiston Police Commission last night renamed Leo McGraw of River Road, Lewiston, as “constable.” He is the school attendance officer.
The appointment was a routine matter, with no dissension. McGraw’s previous one-year term had expired, and the new appointment is for the coming year.
25 years ago, 1986
Cold air and threatening skies failed to deter the enthusiasm of local business leaders Friday as the Lewiston-Auburn Chamber of Commerce greeted area freshman college students at its 33rd annual welcoming barbecue.
Many of the students expected to attend, however, stayed in the warm confines of their dormitories and apartments.
Roughly 100 students attended the affair at the Auburn Municipal Park on Route 4. The attendance was about one-fifth of the expected turnout.
