NEWRY — Bethel native Simon Dumont will throw the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays game.

A professional skier sponsored by Sunday River Ski Resort, Dumont is also an eight-time X Games medalist, world record holder and 2014 Winter Olympic hopeful.

Dumont said Tuesday that he is “really looking forward to throwing the first pitch at Fenway.”

“Growing up in Maine, I’ve been a New England sports fan since I was born,” he said, thanking the Newry resort and the Boston Red Sox for the opportunity.

Dumont was recently tapped by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to help lead the brand’s newest extension: the U.S. Freeskiing Team’s first pro halfpipe team, Darcy Morse, Sunday River spokeswoman, said Tuesday.

This follows the International Olympic Committee’s decision in April to add ski halfpipe to the Olympic program for 2014, she said.

Dumont’s other notable accomplishments include skiing the Red Bull Cubed Pipe in May, which Morse described as “the most difficult halfpipe run in history;” founding New England’s most prestigious annual slope-style event, the Dumont Cup at Sunday River; and breaking the world record for highest air on a quarter-pipe in 2008 at Sunday River.
