BUCKFIELD — Nick DiMaio of the Emergency Services Committee withdrew his letter of resignation at Tuesday night’s selectmen’s meeting.

His decision followed considerable discussion from selectmen and residents, and a plea from the board for him to stay.

The committee was formed at the request of the Budget Committee to study alternatives to Buckfield Rescue to save the town money and do what is best for the town.

Buckfield Rescue is presently the only emergency service for the town. According committee Chairwoman Cindy Dunn, questionnaires were sent to all nearby ambulance services. Six returned the forms, but only Med-Care in Mexico said it would consider working with Buckfield.

Committee member Lucile Allen said she thought DiMaio was the only one on the committee who was open-minded. She said she was upset over the composition of the committee, which includes Rescue Chief Lisa Buck, Fire Chief Tim Brooks, Selectman Eileen Hotham, DiMaio, Dunn and Allen.

Dunn admitted that the last meeting got very heated, but the bottom line is the committee is not done with its findings. “We were charged by the selectmen to study the findings and bring back a recommendation,” she said.

She added that they were still getting information back from Med-Care and the recommendation they will come up with will be what is best for the town’s emergency services.

In other news, the board decided to have a workshop at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, to discuss what areas relate to the town’s vision for the future.

Town Manager Glen Holmes wanted to officially thank the Fire Department, Public Works and Rescue for their efforts taking care of problems from Tropical Storm Irene. He said the only washout was on Sodom Road, but trees were across roads in many places.

The board accepted a bid from Maynard and Sons in Sumner for winter sand at $9 a yard. They also accepted a bid from Wescott Electric for the Municipal Building generator for $6,657.

The board continues to have questions from the public on insurance benefits for employees. Selectman Robin Buswell said they would be looking at this again as they make the final reviews of the policies.

The board accepted a letter of resignation from Bobbi Cote from the Recreation Department.
