In your article about Mt. Blue High School beating Brunswick (“New field, new class,” Sept. 3), the reference to the Cougars playing on the “town’s recreational facility” couldn’t be further from the truth.
Kemp Field is a parcel that local businessman Art Kemp donated to Mt. Blue Area Youth Football after use of the town’s recreational field, Hippach Field, became too restrictive for practical use.
For nearly 10 years, we at MBAYF have raised our own funds, built our buildings and bought our equipment without a single dollar from the town or school district. Due primarily to donations from local people and businesses, we have a private facility that most schools in our state would love to have.
It is an inspiration what can be done without begging for federal, state or local funds.
MBAYF fields two third- and fourth-grade teams, two fifth- and sixth-grade teams, a seventh-grade team and an eighth-grade team, or approximately 150 players. We have recently recycled buildings and components from MBHS that were scheduled for demolition, which have allowed us to present a facility worthy of hosting a varsity football game.
We are working in conjunction with the Regional School Unit 9 athletic department to host all varsity, JV and freshmen home football games while the new facilities at Mt. Blue are being constructed.
Kemp Field and MBAYF are true examples of pride and community volunteerism and I would like credit given where it is due.
