If this wasn’t such a serious issue, it could be considered downright comical to witness the flurry of recent letters and op-ed pieces to local newspapers by various legislative representatives trying to justify their votes to eliminate same-day voter registration, in light of the soon-to-be certified signatures gathered by the Maine People’s Alliance to bring this issue before Maine voters on the ballot in November.

They’re running scared, as they should be, considering more than enough valid signatures were collected and done so more quickly than has ever been done before by a grassroots campaign in Maine. This makes it clear that those who voted to do away with same-day voter registration are seriously out of touch with where everyday Maine citizens are on this issue.

Sadly, but so typical, whenever members of an opposing faction can’t adequately defend their position based on the merits on their arguments, they then resort to attacking their opposition’s organizers and supporters.

The people will have their say in November about restoring their ability to both register and vote on Election Day.

Too bad many of these legislators didn’t first ask their constituents how they would like to have them vote on this subject, to represent the public’s interests, instead of their own, saving all of us the time and trouble of conducting a people’s veto effort.
