AUBURN — The L/A Senior Adult Hockey League is starting its 18th season and will be hosting registration Sunday, Sept. 11, Sunday, Sept. 18 and Monday, Sept. 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pond House near Ingersoll Ice Arena.
Registration fee will remain at $360 per player. The registration is for all returning players as well as new players wanting to enter the league. All new players will have their names placed on the draft list. The player draft will be held on a later date. The amount of new players entering the league will be based on the amount of openings.
Age for women’s division is 18 years of age and older. Age for the men’s division is 25 years of age and older.
The season is scheduled to start the beginning of October and will end mid-March. Games will be played mostly on Friday and Sunday nights.

St. Dom’s athlete to be honored
WATERVILLE — On Sunday, Oct. 9 at Alfond Youth Center, Maine Sports Legends will honor 13 individuals as inductees into their “Hall of Honors.” Selections from Northern Maine are Frank Tapley (posthumous), Donald “Lefty” Graves (posthumous), Emmett “Bud” Porter and Terrence Spurling; from Eastern Maine, Robert J. Lahey, Jr. (posthumous), William G. Fletcher and Edward V. Guiski; from Central Maine Wallace A. Donovan (posthumous), Joseph A. Linscott and Francis E. Purnell; and from Southern Maine Bob Brown, Faith Littlefield (posthumous) and Jim Beaudry.
These individuals have been chosen by regional committees for their accomplishments and contributions to youth and sports in Maine. Their willingness to participate in this event will assist the Maine Sports Legends in its efforts to provide funds for the education of outstanding scholar athletes carrying out the primary goal of the organization.
Proceeds from the banquet provide funding for eight scholar athletes, one male and one female from each of four regions of the state. All eight will receive $500 awards and two students, designated as outstanding, will receive another $1,000 each. This year’s recipients are Southern Aroostook High School’s Shelby Hartin; Duncan (DJ) Flynn, Caribou High School; Dacie Manion, Old Town High School; Evan Nadeau, Brewer High School; Carolyn Joseph, St. Dominic Academy; Michael McCann, Winslow High School; Danielle Tomes, Yarmouth High School; and Eric Trautman-Mosher, Morse High School.
The banquet will begin at 12:30 p.m., following a social half hour which begins at noon. Tickets are $35 at reserved tables of eight and can be obtained by calling 622-1539 or by email to [email protected].
Softball tourney set
LISBON — The inaugural Names In A Hat Softball Tournament will be held this weekend on Lisbon fields. Registrations will be taken from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Everyone is welcome to play, and a $20 fee will be collected before the draw. All names will be put into a hat and drawn for teams. USM baseball clinic
GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine baseball staff will be conducting the third-annual Advanced Baseball Clinic on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic is for high school players with aspirations of playing college baseball. Instruction will take place in the morning and games will take place in the afternoon. The clinic will take place at the USM Baseball Stadium on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine. Boothbay charity event
BOOTHBAY — Local and national sports personalities are making arrangements to meet in Boothbay for the 21st annual Boothbay Charities Classic golf tournament, lobster bake, sports auction and comedy night. The events are sscheduled from Sept. 21 to 24 and benefit Special Olympics Maine. Whether it’s football, baseball, hockey, racing or golf, the weekend likely has something for the sports fan in you.
Celebrities attending the 2011 tournament will include: Ben Davidson and Otis Sistrunk from the Oakland Raiders; Super Bowl champions quarterback Earl Morrall; Wilbur Wood, knuckleball pitcher from the Red Sox and White Sox; Tom Mack, NFL hall of famer; former Yankees manager Stump (Carl) Merrill; Wayne Soares from ESPN/Comedy Network; Jeff Nelson from the Portland Pirates/Washington Capitals; Dick Lambry of the Bruins/St. Louis Blues; Tom Yewcic, punter for the Patriots; former Reds and Red Sox pitcher Jack Billingham; Heisman Trophy Winner Joe Bellino; Bruce Laird and Tom Norwatzki of the Baltimore Colts; “Spaceman” Bill Lee; and more.
Team openings and limited individual golfer positions are still available for Saturday morning’s golf tournament, which includes guaranteed pairing with a celebrity, an awesome goodie bag provided by tournament sponsors, and a seat at Friday nights lobster bake and sports auction.

The lobster bake will take place under the big top at the Railway Village on Friday at 4 p.m. and is a great opportunity for the public to mix and mingle with the celebrities. New to this year’s event will be a Twin Bill of Laughs on Wednesday, September 21 at the Carousel Music Theatre on Townsend Ave. in Boothbay. Join us for a night of laughs with comedians Wayne Soares and Bucky Lewis. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the first show begins at 7 p.m. The second show is at 8 p.m. There will be a silent auction and door prizes.
