WALES —A Centre Road man credits his German shepherd with chasing away two men who attacked him when he found them in his home Wednesday.

Robert Goucher, 36, of 40 Centre Road was taken to the hospital after the attack.

Goucher came home to find the burglary in progress. One burglar whacked him in the head and the other one cut him. “A guy hiding in the bathroom clubbed me over the head and another guy was in the hallway with a knife,” he said early Thursday in a phone interview.

“I got cuts all over me,” Goucher said. He said he was cut on his chest and other areas, and was dazed from being hit on the side and back of his head.

Goucher’s 140-pound dog, Dozer, heard the commotion. “Luckily, my dog got pissed. He busted out of his kennel and came to the rescue. He definitely will get a big bone for that,” he said.

When Dozer came running, the invaders high-tailed it out of there. “They took off with the dog chasing them,” Goucher said.

With the burglars fleeing, Goucher called 911.

Police swarmed the home.

Goucher was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he was treated for minor injuries, police said. The victim said he probably suffered a concussion. “I guess when they took me to the hospital, I was in and out of consciousness,” he said.

Goucher told investigators he came home shortly before noon to find that his home was being burglarized.

According to Maine State Police Lt. Walter Grzyb, Goucher suffered nearly a dozen wounds as he tried to fend off the attackers.

By Wednesday night, no arrest had been made. State police detectives spoke with Goucher about the attack but were waiting for him to recover from his injuries before questioning him further. “They asked me a lot of questions,” Goucher said.

The victim said he did not know the burglars.

“We’ll need to interview him again, once his medical condition improves, to get further details about what happened,” Maine Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Goucher said he’s just glad his children weren’t home. “We’ve lived here a long time and nothing has ever happened like this,” he said.

Centre Road connects with Route 132 on one end and becomes Warren Road on the other.
