BETHEL — Goodwill AmeriCorps members in Maine will take place in a national pledge of service in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001. As AmeriCorps members begin their new terms of service, they will reach out and encourage others to pledge their time to serve.

The mission of this call to action is to “provide a positive and forward-looking way for Americans and others to forever honor and remember the 9/11 victims, survivors and the many that rose in service in response to the 9/11 tragedy, including first responders, recovery workers, volunteers, public safety officers and members of our military”

Goodwill received a grant of $500 from the Maine Commission for Community to conduct outreach in various communities throughout the month of September. AmeriCorps members will be handing out pledge cards and information about AmeriCorps in the next few weeks in several towns throughout Maine, including Belfast, Bethel, Camden, Fort Fairfield, Greenville, Lebanon, Port Clyde, Portland, Raymond, Rockport, Searsport, Skowhegan, Sullivan and Tenants Harbor. Goodwill manages three unique AmeriCorps programs that help strengthen local communities and organizations in northern New England. The Community Resource Corps places volunteers with nonprofit organizations to help strengthen volunteer programs; the Emergency Response Corps places volunteers in rural fire departments and ambulance services; and Great Strides, a new program, places volunteers in rural schools to engage at-risk students in a successful school experience.
