RUMFORD — The International Brotherhood of Magician’s Ring 362 will hold the 2011 Nate Leipzig Close-up Magic Contest on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 49 Franklin reception hall.
Contestants will have 10 minutes to perform close-up magic before moving to the next station. Audience members will remain at each station as magicians rotate through each group. Contestants will likely perform close-up acts for four or more groups, but no more than six.
The contest is similar to reality TV shows in that audience members vote for their favorite act. Audience members will set their own criteria, with entertainment value, creativity, audience interaction and the strength of a performer’s magic all playing a role.
Some of the best close-up magic performers in the region are expected to participate.
The contest is named for Nate Leipzig, (Nathan Leipziger), who was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1873. He began his career in magic in Detroit, performing in theaters and clubs. In his early years, his talent as an entertainer was evident, but his magic skills were humble.
Upon seeing a theatrical performance featuring other magicians, he became devoted to the sleight-of-hand technique, improving many effects and inventing new ones. Dai Vernon, a Canadian magician who mentored many famous magicians, met Leipzig in New York City in the early 1900s, and admired his skills. Leipzig granted Vernon permission to document his magic in the book “Vernon on Leipzig.”
Leipzig set himself apart from other magicians with his ability to entertain. His performances were noted for their easy grace and natural movement. His regal bearing and stage presence set him apart from most vaudeville entertainers, resulting in prestigious engagements in Europe, including performances for royalty.
Contestants must be members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and of Ring 362. People may join Ring 362 on the spot for $10. Applicants to the International Brotherhood of Magicians are also welcome. Contact contest official Scot Grassette at 369-0129) for more information.
The magic contest will begin at 4 p.m. Admission is $6 at the door. Pub food and drinks will be available. The reception hall is at 49 Franklin St.
