DEAR SUN SPOTS: First of all, as everyone else does, thanks so much for all the help you give. It’s so appreciated — the first thing I read online every day! I have two totally unrelated questions.

I’m trying to find out who to contact about submitting an item or two into a few of the fall agricultural fairs. Do you have to be a 4-H member? I’m looking specifically at craft/handmade items for the exhibitions halls.

As I drive by Lake Auburn everyday, I’ve always wondered about the small little island (closes to Taber’s). It looks to me as if it floats, but I’ve been told by many that it’s stationary. Do you have any information/history about it? Thanks again. — Lori, Livermore

ANSWER: Sun Spots was pretty sure most fairs have plenty of non-4-H entrants, but to be sure she contacted Neal Yeaton, the secretary for Farmington County Fair, who said:

“No, you do not have to be a 4-H member to enter fancy work; at Farmington entries are taken in the exhibition hall on Friday and Saturday before the fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our website is farmingtonfairmaine.com; look at the premium list for the different classes. They can find the different fair contact on the state fair association website at www.mainefairs.org. Hope this helps.”

Also, other individuals looking for independent rental space may contact Glenda Barker at 778-2689. Fair dates are Sept. 18 to 24.

Sun Spots called the Auburn Water and Sewerage District to get an answer to your question. They said the island is not floating. She awaits stories about the island from her readers.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: While searching for information on the value of the print “Childhood Days” by George Sottung in my mother’s estate, I found in Sun Spots’ 1998 archives someone who was searching for this print. If you have a way to still contact them and can give them my contact information, perhaps we can help each other. Thanks so much. — Josie Farr, gen@cccexpress.com

ANSWER: Any paper backup for that column is long gone, but perhaps that reader will see your query in this column and respond.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You can usually find out what is happening, and why, in our area so I am asking this question: I was driving on Main Street the other day and noticed that the WCSH studio is “For Rent.” When did they move out? Is Lewiston-Auburn of so little importance in the state that WCSH does not even want or need a presence here any longer? Thanks for your help. You provide a very important service for the residents of the area. — Lucy Bisson, boomer1946@roadrunner.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots emailed with Debbie Sample in community relations at WCSH. She said that they “value our longtime commitment to the Lewiston-Auburn community. We simply moved to another location in Lewiston. We now rent a space at MPBN. The studio was never a public space it was just for our use.”

According to its website, MPBN has its offices at 1450 Lisbon St.
