OXFORD — New drop-off points for after-school activity bus runs are expected to be completed by the end of this week, School Superintendent Rick Colpitts said.

Colpitts told the Board of Directors at its Tuesday meeting that the new plan will get students closer to their homes but not necessarily to their door.

“Transportation has been a nightmare. This has not been an easy transition with the cuts in the (transportation) budget,” Colpitts said.

With seven bus routes cut from last year’s schedule to save $110,000 in this year’s school budget, Colpitts said some routes are longer and after-school bus runs have been affected.

“Parents said cut the after-school bus runs to maintain the community elementary schools,” Colpitts said.

While the original idea was to have only one drop-off point for students using the after-school bus in each of the district’s eight towns, Colpitts said school officials are now trying to work out a schedule where “kids may get close to home but not necessarily at their home.”

The idea is to run the buses as efficiently and effectively as possible, he said.

Parents will be informed about the new after-school bus runs through their school principals.
