Letters purporting that elimination of same-day voter registration is some sort of Republican conspiracy to tilt elections in their favor are baffling.
This argument implies that the vast majority of voters who currently benefit from same-day voter registration are Democrats or members of alternative parties. Who is trying to tilt what here?
Would these writers’ sentiments change if the Republican Party got a little better at rounding up those who were so apathetic about the election process that they didn’t care enough to register to vote in advance? And is driving them by the busload to polls on Election Day likely to lead to less-than-informed votes?
Is this really what the “right to vote,” should look like?
The United States — despite the documented problems in the last election with voting equipment and the usual shenanigans both major parties will try to sway the election — still has the cleanest election process in the world.
It takes little forethought to register to vote in a way that ensures municipalities have adequate time to apply processes designed to dissuade voter fraud, and that all parties are equally denied the opportunity to unfairly stuff the ballot box.
