LISBON — Girl Scouts of Maine has announced that Emily Shedd of Lisbon has earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award for K.I.S.S. (Keep it Somewhere Sanitary), a community service project that provided new pet waste receptacles at the Lisbon Trail System.

“While walking the trails, I noticed that a lot of folks were not picking up after their pets,” said Shedd. “That’s when I decided that cleaning the trails would be a great way to earn the Gold Award. I made and installed two pet waste receptacles on the path and placed posters in the trailway kiosk to inform the public about the new receptacles and the hazards of pet waste. Informational flyers were distributed around town and I enlisted the help of local Girl Scout troops for a trail clean-up day. I’ve received many thanks for my efforts and I’m happy to report that people began using the pet waste receptacles within 1/2 hour of installation! This project has taught me that I have the skills and desire to see things through and that my efforts can and do make a difference.”

“The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn and represents her personal journey of leadership, career explorations, self-improvement and service,” said Joan McDonald, CEO, Girl Scouts of Maine. “To earn the award, a girl must spend a minimum of 65 hours planning and carrying out her project.”
