PARIS — Maine Veterans’ Home recognizes Leo Estes as the veteran of the month.

Estes was born on Dec. 14, 1919, in West Paris at his parent’s house. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March of 1956 and he served during World War II in Europe, England, Germany and Italy. While stationed in England Leo met what would be his lovely wife Winifried who was serving in the British Army. Leo rose to Sgt. 1st Class before he retired and was honorably discharged in May of 1962. For his service, Leo received the Good Conduct Medal.

Upon his discharge, Leo returned to Maine and after his wife’s waiting period was over in England, they both moved to Massachusetts where he started his painting business, Leo’s. They raised two children together. Leo returned to Maine and retired from Tom Finns shoe repair. Throughout his career he did custodial work at the Hebron school and was a licensed boiler operator for Paris Manufacturing.

Leo came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in July of 2009 and currently resides on the C -Unit. He has enjoyed hobbies such as fishing, crossword puzzles, dancing and listening to old-fashioned country music, building bird houses and watching The Wheel of Fortune. Leo belongs to the VFW and the American Legion. He has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
