LIVERMORE FALLS— Spruce Mountain was simply outclassed in its first-ever Class B Campbell Conference football game at Griffin Field Friday night.

Falmouth quarterback Matt Kingry threw for three touchdowns in the first half and the defense bottled up the Phoenix in a 33-7 win.

Spruce Mountain (1-1) has a greater number of options at its disposal, however, this was not evident as Falmouth proved up to the challenge. Jay and Livermore Falls schools have combined to form RSU 73.

“Yeah it has given us some more depth for sure,” Spruce Mountain coach Mark Bonnevie said. “We were not able to do the things that we wanted to. I don’t know if it was the emotions of our first home game.”

Bill Calden broke off-tackle and sprinted 84 yards up the left sideline for a TD. Brandon Hodges kicked the extra point to give Spruce Mountain its only lead, 7-6. Calden (116 yards, 19 rushes) runs behind an experienced offensive line consisting of tackles Josh Wilcox and Jake Richards; guards Hodges and Tommy Lee and center Kyle Souther.

Calden gained 333 yards and scored three TDs in a win against Greely, but he was unable to get on track.

Quarterback Zach Bonnevie completed four passes for three yards. The longest was a 22-yard reception by Jake Bessey.

Falmouth (2-0) relied on a strong running game from Will Siperly (97 yards, 10 rushes), but its passing attack as unstoppable. Kingry (7-for-12 for 124 yards in the first half) connected with big Ben Cooleen for 15 and 42 yards and hit Ryan McDonald for 22 yards.

The Falmouth receivers constantly ran behind the Phoenix secondary. Falmouth coach John Fitzsimmons praised his teams efforts and lauded the productive start. Falmouth shutout Gray-New Gloucester in its season opener.

The Phoenix defense led by Richards, Souther, nose guard James Metzger. linebackers Hodges, James Barker and Nate Shink shot itself in the foot ( eight penalties for 80 yards). This undisciplined play extended several Falmouth drives.

“In the second half things started to work,”Bonnevie said. “Falmouth is a talented club and they had beat us over the top, but we adjusted and shut down Cooleen. They only scored once (McDonald 22-yard run) in the fourth quarter.”
