AUGUSTA — Joseph E.R. Martineau, 83, formerly of Rumford, died Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born in Rumford Nov. 11, 1927, a son of Joseph P. and Blanche Boivin Martineau. He was educated in Rumford schools and received an honorary diploma from Mountain Valley High School in 2004.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from the Navy reserves after 27 years of service. He was employed for over 20 years as a diesel mechanic for the Maine Department of Transportation.

He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, boating, working on his house, and working on engines. He also loved going out to eat, and especially enjoyed dessert.

Surviving are his son, Dennis G. Martineau, of Auburn; brothers, Raymond Martineau of Scarborough, Donald Martineau and wife, Janice Clifton, of Richmond, Va., Marcel Martineau and wife, Nila, of Rumford, and Eugene Martineau and wife, Rosemary, of Dunnellon; sisters, Jeannette Knox of Dixfield, Irene Sinclair of Mexico, Rita Girardin of Dixfield, Yvette LeBlanc and husband, Leroy, of Dixfield, and Joanne Morin and husband, Dick, of Standish; and granddaughter, Kristian M. Martineau.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Geraldine, in 1999; and a sister, Pauline Blanchard.
