RUMFORD — Elmer Harris Jones Sr., 91, of Rumford, died at the Rumford Community Home on Thursday, Sept. 8, with family members by his side.

Elmer was born in Canton on May 22, 1920, the son of Samuel Harris and Marguerite (Russ) Jones. He graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford in 1938. Enlisting in the United States Army when World War II broke out, he served as a radio man in the First American Volunteer Group, China-Burma Theater, achieving the rank of sergeant before being mustered out at the end of the war.

Elmer worked for 40 years at the Oxford Paper Company in Rumford, most of them in the Meter Department, before retiring in 1986.

He was a past member of La Societe Des 40 Hommes Et 8 Chevaux, the N.R.A. and a 55-continuous-years member of the American Legion. An avid marksman, he competed for many years in national and international shooting meets.

Survivors include sisters, Helen Malley of Mexico, Marcia Alice Barkey of Findley, Ohio, and Nora Babb of Plantersville, Miss.; brothers, Herman Jones of Arizona (formerly of Canton), Malcolm and Walter Jones of Rumford and Harold “Okie” Jones of Canton; daughter, Lucille “Lorrie” Hodsdon and husband, Roscoe, of Roxbury; sons, Elmer “Butch” Harris Jones, Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Richmond, Texas, and Steven Louis Jones of Byron; grandchildren, Donald Hodsdon and wife, Karen, Archie Hodsdon and wife, Amy, Roy Hodsdon and wife, Renee, and Ray Hodsdon; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Kenneth Jones; and a sister, Esther Nickerson.
