LISBON — A Portland man was arrested Monday on charges of stealing an SUV and backing it into a cruiser during a nearly five-mile chase. At one point, the SUV went airborne over Main Street, Lisbon police officer Jeff Williams said.
Michael Humiston, 23, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for an officer, driving to endanger, operating after license suspension and refusing to submit to arrest, Williams said. A check revealed there were several outstanding warrants on Humiston issued from Portland Police Department, he said.
Also charged in the 2 a.m. chase was Humiston’s passenger, Shawn Dame, 19, of Portland on charges of unauthorized use and failure to give correct name, address and date of birth, Williams said.
Both men remained at Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Monday night, a jail spokesman said.
Williams said he was patrolling in Lisbon Falls when he spotted a vehicle speeding west on Route 196 near the Topsham town line. When he attempted to pull it over, the driver turned onto Union Street, sped up a hill and ran a stop sign, and the SUV went airborne over Main Street onto Maple Street.
The driver turned left onto Summer Street and right onto Main Street and crossed Bowdionham Road to Fisher Road and stopped near the Bowdoin town line, Williams said. The driver attempted to reverse direction and backed into the front of the police cruiser.
Williams said Humiston had to be forcibly removed from the SUV.
Damage to the stolen 2002 Saturn owned by a Falmouth woman was estimated at between $1,200 and $1,500 damage, and to the cruiser at $200.
