LEWISTON — On a beautiful day for fall baseball, the Lewiston Lumberjaxx 12-and-under team downed visiting Freeport, 7-6, on Saturday.

With the field once again ready for action after the absence of baseball since July, the ‘Jaxx took the field at Elliot Ace. Little League Complex with enthusiasm, looking to establish themselves early.

Damien St. Pierre drew the start and promptly struck out the first batter he faced. After he plunked the next batter in the foot, catcher Nate Osgood gunned him out trying to steal second. St. Pierre stranded two to end the inning. Lewiston bats were quiet in their half of the inning.

Freeport led off the second inning with a single, took second on a passed ball, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch putting them up 1-0. St. Pierre seemed to take it personally, striking out the next six batters, mixing in off-speed pitches with a well-placed fastball.

Freeport pitching kept Lewiston hitters off balance and hitless through five innings, striking out 11 along the way. ‘Jaxx pitcher Matt Forgues benefited from slick fielding by shortstop Matt Clifford, keeping Freeport off the board in the fourth and fifth innings. Jalen Allison relieved Forgues in the sixth before the Lewiston offense came to life.

Grant Hartley smoked a single into right field. Forgues reached on an error at second before Freeport made a pitching change. Lewiston capitalized on three walks and two hit batsmen to make the score 5-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Freeport parlayed three hits, two errors and a bunt into five runs of their own to boost them back into the lead, 6-5. But Lewiston fought right back in the bottom of the seventh inning. After the first two hitters struck out, Clifford singled to center and scored when Hartley stroked a ball into the gap in right-center for an RBI double, evening the score at six.

Lewiston hurler Keegan Voss, who took over for Allison in the sixth, kept Freeport off the board for two and a third with a heavy fastball before helping his own cause at the plate with an RBI single in the eighth for a 7-6 lead.

Hunter Landry took the mound with two on in the top of the ninth and struck out the only batter he faced for the save.

Lewiston next plays at Old Orchard Beach Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lumberjaxx middle school team visits Sanford for a doubleheader at 10 a.m. Sunday.
