SUMNER — In a special town meeting Tuesday night, Danny Perron was elected selectman to fill the spot vacated by the resignation of Glenn Hinckley in June.

Perron received 43 votes; candidate Wally Litchfield got 33.

Voters also approved a recall ordinance by a vote of 34-26.

Selectman Mary Ann Haxton read the ordinance at the request of a voter but also summarized it before the reading. Haxton said the board had looked at several recall ordinances from other towns and states and the Maine Municipal Association before drafting the ordinance.

The ordinance allows people to attempt to recall public officials for failure to carry out duties and responsibilities of the office; engaging in conduct that brings the office into disrepute; engaging in conduct that demonstrates unfitness to hold office; and being indicted or convicted of a crime.

Resident George Jones spoke against the ordinance, saying officials were elected for one or three years and could be voted out at the end of their terms. He said a recall ordinance was disruptive and the duties of selectmen are time-consuming. They shouldn’t always be having to look over their shoulders to see who they were making unhappy with their decisions.

Bob Runes noted a recent case in a neighboring town that had no way to legally oust an elected official who was guilty of a crime.

Bill Glass moderated the meeting held in the fire station with 76 voters in attendance.
