DIXFIELD — It took a while to develop, but when the Dirigo and Mountain Valley girls’ soccer teams finally met, the battle became an instant classic.

In the first-ever night game at Dirigo’s Harlow Park, both teams had numerous chances to score. Ultimately, the teams’ goaltenders — Tasha DeRoche of Dirigo and Katlin Armstrong of Mountain Valley — had the final say as the Falcons and Cougars battled to a 0-0 deadlock.

The action-packed contest was played before a large crowd, and each team spent most of the game shuffling players in and out to try and find the right combinations.

“We were pumped for this,” DeRoche said. “It was just a great battle between Mountain Valley and Dirigo and both teams played their hearts out. We had tried a different (attack), but we just didn’t finish.”

There were several scoring opportunities as the Cougars pressured in the offensive zone. Junior Natalie Bolduc dribbled in on the right and fired a shot that hit the cross bar on the left side with 4:24 remaining in the second extra session. Alyssa Wade and Miranda Shurtleff also had shots earlier in regulation, but Armstrong (15 saves) cradled them all.

Mountain Valley (1-3-1) had chances, also. Hannah Lapoint set up Jamica Ford on a breakaway, and Shannon Labauskas broke in alone, but Deroche (eight saves) rushed out of the net.

“I didn’t need to get the team up for this game, my seniors were ready for this,” said Mountain Valley coach Jason Perreault, who had switched to four forwards following a win over Winthrop.

Dirigo (2-0-1) flooded the zone and Bolduc controlled the ball, sidestepped a defender and booted a shot that went wide

“We really didn’t make many adjustments,” Dirigo coach Art Chamberlin said. “We started with two forwards, but at halftime the girls wanted to change back to a three-person line. I moved Kayla Gaudin up to halfback for more pressure. We had good ball movement and passing, but you have to credit Mountain Valley because they came to play.”

Falcons sweeper Autumn Koch cleared several balls. The Cougars’ back line of Ambyr Wilson, Mariah Larson and Gaudin held steady.

Kaitlyn Virgin had the Falcons’ best chance in overtime, but misfired on a shot from the right post.
