LITCHFIELD — The Oak Hill school district board of directors on Wednesday voted in favor of door security systems for Libby-Tozier and Carrie Ricker schools.
By an 8-0 vote, the board agreed to have security systems installed similar to the one at the former Wales Central School, which closed earlier this year.
The vote clears the way for board members to begin exploring how the systems will be paid for. It was not known how much the security improvements would cost. Similar systems at other schools cost just shy of $20,000.
“Compare that to the safety of a student or a teacher,” said Brad Tripp, father of two Libby-Tozier students.
According to Tripp, there was no specific incident that prompted parents to begin clamoring for more security. Rather, it was more the fact that they had become accustomed to having security at the school in Wales. Once they got to the new schools, the absence of extra security was apparent.
“We were used to having that safety measure in place,” Tripp said.
The school board is also exploring more advanced security for Oak Hill High School in Wales.
