HIRAM — Two men were arrested Tuesday after a resident said he saw them snooping through a shed.
Derek Goode, 27, of Conway, N.H., was charged with furnishing marijuana and Corey J. Warren of Fryeburg was charged with violating his probation after deputies chased them from a Hiram yard.
According to Sgt. Timothy Ontengco of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, the men may have been searching people’s sheds for marijuana. He said he found pot branches from plants in Goode’s car.
According to Ontengco, Deputy Danielle Welch first received a report of a crime in progress on Hiram Hill Road on Tuesday. A homeowner tried to detain the suspects at gunpoint but they fled, Ontengco said.
Welch located Warren on the way to the scene and arrested him. While on his way to assist her, Ontengco said a speeding van driven by Goode passed him. Ontengco drove after the van, which tried to evade him by driving down side streets.
“It wasn’t really a chase,” Ontengco said. “I was able to see where he went.” He said when Goode stopped, Ontengco found more than 1.25 ounces of marijuana leaves and branches in the vehicle. He said it was enough to constitute a “criminal amount” of marijuana.
Ontengco said there was no marijuana in the shed of the homeowner who called the police.
He said there have been no theft or burglary charges filed against the two men, who said they were cutting across people’s yards and denied going into sheds. The source of the plants is still under investigation.
No one had called to report marijuana missing from the Hiram area. “If anyone wants to report, we’ll take the report,” Ontengco said.
