FARMINGTON — A Franklin County justice sentenced a former University of Maine at Farmington student Friday to 10 years in prison with all but 20 months suspended for the accidental shooting death of his best friend in May.
Ryan Ouimet, 24, of Colts Neck, N.J., pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Andrew Holland, 23, of Cape Elizabeth on May 31 in Farmington.
The two had graduated from UMF earlier that month.
Ouimet had smoked marijuana at a friend’s home on High Street in Farmington and dancing around with a loaded semi-automatic pistol in his hand.
When changed the music on the radio, the gun went off and hit Holland in the abdomen.
Justice Michaela Murphy also sentenced Ouimet to four years of probation and 100 hours of community service speaking to high and middle school students about the dangers of mixing drugs and guns.
