FARMINGTON — A driver and passenger escaped injury Wednesday evening when their vehicle struck a 700-pound bull moose on the Fairbanks Road.

The moose had to be killed due to its injuries.

Steve Kurowski, 46, of Greene was driving a 2000 GMC pickup south on the  Fairbanks Road, a section of Route 4 north of town, at about 8 p.m. when a bull moose came onto the roadway in front of the vehicle, police said.

The moose was badly injured but did make it off the road and down into a deep gully. A Farmington police officer killed it, department secretary Bonnie Pomeroy relayed from the police report.

Frank Nardone, 45, address unknown, was riding with Kurowski. Both were wearing seat belts.

The truck received quite a bit of damage and was towed from the scene.

The meat from the dead animal was given away, Pomeroy said.

Patrol Officer Courtney Krause and Sgt. Michael Adcock responded to the the accident and were assisted by Officer Darin Gilbert.
