OXFORD — About 100 senior citizens enjoyed agricultural events, entertainment and cake and tea at the Oxford Fair on Thursday.
Sue Goulet, coordinator of Senior Day, said some of the events were moved inside to the betting parlor because of the rain but were still going on as scheduled despite dozens of seniors leaving due to a brief, heavy downpour earlier in the day.
“We figured if it was still raining when we got here we would just keep on going to Lewiston” to shop, said Lorraine Barre of Rumford who, along with her husband, Norman, drove the hour-long trip to the fair.
Kay Daniels of West Paris and Roger Hadley of Paris, who raised horses for many years, enjoyed the sheep and cows in the show barns, stopping to chat with one owner about a breed of cow that came from the South.
Judging was held Thursday morning as young people showed their sheep and cows in the showmanship and meat classes before the animals are auctioned at market Friday. The youths can earn hundreds of dollars for the meat that is bought by local area farms and stores.
The fair continues Friday with the youth market lamb and beef auction beginning at 9 a.m., horse pulling at noon, a pig scramble at 6 p.m., and a demolition derby, horse pulling and entertainment Friday night.
