T.J. Cowin apparently isn’t one for long introductions.

Cowin, a sophomore from Newry who played on multiple championship teams at Telstar Regional High School, wasted no time exhibiting her talents for new Saint Joseph’s College teammates and field hockey opponents.

In her first week with the Monks, Cowin scored four goals and walked away with two weekly awards.

The transfer from Simmons College achieved a hat trick in her first start with St. Joe’s, propelling the Monks past Anna Maria.

Her encore? Cowin merely scored the game-winner in overtime to give St. Joe’s a 2-1 win over Kean.

For those efforts, she was named both ECAC offensive player of the week and NAC player of the week for the period ending Sept. 11.

Cowin wasn’t able to play Saturday in what promised to be a triumphant return to Simmons, but her teammates picked her up in a 3-2 victory.

In her only season at Simmons, Cowin led the team with 11 goals, including four game-winners, and six assists.

Carley Denis of Lewiston has started every game defensively for St. Joe‘s (3-1).

Another Lewiston alum, Ali Hersi, has scored one goal for the Monks’ men’s soccer team in a 3-2 start.

Joe Murphy of Poland has started every game thus far for St. Joe’s. Matt Barlion of Auburn (St. Dom’s) and Tyler Gates of Peru (Dirigo) also are in the mix with the Monks.

Huskies’ helping hands

The won-lost records provide mixed reviews, but there is no disputing the impact of numerous tri-county athletes on the fall sports program at the University of Southern Maine.

No fewer than five local graduates are starting regularly for the Huskies’ soccer and field hockey programs.

Leading the charge are juniors Whitney McDaniel of Livermore, graduate of the former Livermore Falls High School, and Kailey Bubier of Auburn, a product of Hebron Academy.

Southern Maine is on a four-game field hockey winning streak, and McDaniel and Bubier are major reasons why. McDaniel scored two goals and Bubier dealt two assists in a 5-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State.

Senior Kayla Kimball of Winthrop and freshman Gail Lavorgna of Milton Township (Telstar) have made an impact on defense.

With Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Bridgewater State, USM served up its fourth shutout in a row.

Speaking of zeroes on the scoreboard. Kat Rothe of Leeds (Leavitt) was largely responsible for one this past week. Rothe made five saves Wednesday, backstopping USM to a 1-0, double-overtime win over the University of Maine at Farmington in women’s soccer.

Rothe, a senior, has played every minute in goal thus far for the Huskies. She has 42 saves and a 1.46 goals-against average. The win over Farmington was Southern Maine’s second in six games.

Lewiston High School graduates Tyler Hartman, Caleb Leino and Chase Cote didn’t need to wait long for their shot with the Southern Maine men’s soccer team.

Hartman and Leino are starting on defense as freshmen, while classmate Cote has seen time in the misfield.

Southern Maine celebrated its first win of the season Saturday, 1-0, over Western Connecticut State.
