Craft fair tables

AUBURN — The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 31 will host a craft fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the post home, 426 Washington St.

Tables are available for rent. Cost is $25 per table that has electricity; $20 for tables with no electricity.

To reserve a table, call Colleen at 345-3006. Tables are limited.

LEWISTON — The tenants and employees of Montello Heights Retirement Community at 550 College St. will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Community Room on the ground floor. The public is invited.

Jewelry sale

SABATTUS — The American Legion Auxiliary of Sabattus Unit 135 will hold a Lia Sophia jewelry fundraising event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. The event is free and open to the public.

All proceeds will fund care packages for local servicemen and women currently serving overseas. There will be free raffle drawings for jewelry including a “bring your friend” and “arrive on time” raffle. For more information, contact Katie at 333-7279.

HipKids! fitness

AUBURN — Join Girl Scouts and Hip Fitness Studio for fun and fitness after school in Auburn. HipKids! creates an exciting atmosphere for girls to release their energy in a safe and healthy environment and will teach team building and self confidence.

Interactive activities will promote dance, socialization, physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle and fun. A healthy snack will be provided. Girls in grades K-5 will meet once a week for six weeks during the months of October and November.

The cost of the program is $20 for the six-week series. There is an additional $12 membership fee for non-Girl Scouts. Membership assistance is available for this fee.

Preregistration along with payment is necessary by Sept. 26.

Ovarian cancer

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a free ovarian cancer workshop to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Breaking the Silence on Ovarian Cancer” will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at CMMC, 12 High St., Conference Room H.

Ronni Arno Blaisdell, director of communications and public relations for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, will discuss the quiet, but not silent, signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Registrants are encouraged to take part in Teal Toes and have their nails painted by volunteers in the color designated for ovarian cancer awareness.

HEBRON — Hebron Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at the town office at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27. The program will consist of a review of the society’s past, a look at its current operation and ideas and goals for its future. Three members will talk on these stages and membership will be invited to contribute to discussion. The public is invited.

Night creatures

TOPSHAM — The Cathance River Education Alliance and Kristin Lamb of the York Center for Wildlife will present an introduction to Maine’s creatures of the night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Topsham Public Library.

Using live animals and hands-on materials, participants will see how nocturnal mammals utilize all of their senses to find food and shelter at night. Live animals will also demonstrate some unique adaptations these animals have.

The event is free and open to the public.

French sing-along

LEWISTON — The University of Southern Maine’s Franco-American Collection will hold monthly French sing-along sessions once more, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 28. Sessions will be held at USM LAC at 51 Westminster St., from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.

Attendance is free and, since song sheets are provided, no knowledge of French is required.

Audience members are encouraged to submit their own favorite tunes or to share stories and jokes with the group. Anybody interested in performing at the event should contact James Myall, collection coordinator, at 753-6545 or [email protected].

Poetry reading

LEWISTON — Joseph Ziehm will do a poetry reading of his new book, “Poetry of Mine,” currently available on the iBook store, from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the Lewiston Public Library in the Couture conference room.

The event will be a sample of reading of poems, poetry and discussion. The book is $3.99 from the iBook store. Ziehm is a local poet now residing in the Lewiston area.
