Grange officers

AUBURN — A joint installation of officers will be held at Danville Junction Grange on Thursday, Sept. 22, with members of Sabbathday Lake Grange as guests. Officers will be installed by state Flora Victoria Huff and her installing team. There will be a 6 p.m. potluck supper with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m. All members and guests are welcome.

Concert fundraiser

OTISFIELD — The East Otisfield Free Baptist Church will host a piano concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at 231 Rayville Road.

Pianist Jo Ellen Winslow from Van Buren will present an hour concert of sacred, gospel, classical and folk music. Winslow started playing the piano in church when she was 11 years old and, over the years, she has played for many denominations and feels this is her calling in doing the Lord’s work.

This past spring, Winslow presented a concert at Trinity in Stockholm for The Lords’ Pantry, the food pantry of the Swedish Colony. She also presented a similar concert for the 125th anniversary of New Sweden Covenant Church.

Following the concert, a community reception will be held in the fellowship room.

A love offering will be taken for Brian and Kathy Winslow to help with their family’s expenses during Brian’s illness. The Winslow’s live in Bolster Mills and have two teenagers living at home. They also have a son who lives in Auburn.

Benefit for Riker

LEWISTON — The Green Ladle will host a benefit breakfast for Riker Star Dresser from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. Riker, age 6 months, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and will undergo a bone marrow transplant in Boston.

The breakfast will be walk-ins only, no reservations required. Cost is $10 per guest and menu includes made-to-order omelets with seven filling choices, crepe station with fruit fillings, baked ham carving station, homefries, bacon, sausage, baked beans, muffins, quickbreads, scones, fruit salad and coffee, tea or juice.

Komen fundraiser

LEWISTON — A family pasta dinner fundraiser to benefit Party in Pink for Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept, 24, at Girl Power Fitness, 74 Westminster St.

Zumba Fitness is teaming up with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure through the global Party in Pink movement to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.

Genealogy move

AUBURN — The Maine Franco-American Genealogical Society library reopened on Sept. 17 at their new location on the second floor of the Fortin Funeral Home, corner of Center and Turner streets. A formal open house is being planned for the near future.

The library moved from the Great Falls School building, the old Edward Little High School, which is scheduled to be demolished in the near future.

The move involved packing, moving, unpacking, taking an inventory of approximately 3,500 books and volumes in series, besides all of the furniture, 40 bookcases and also more than 600 searchable CD and DVDs for researching locations, family lores and history locations.

Brain lecture

AUBURN — Dr. Jay Neil Jr., an anesthesiologist practicing in Bangor, will give a free six-lecture series presented over two weekends beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Auburn Adventist Auditorium, 316 Minot Ave. Topics include Healthy Brain Lifestyle, Feeding Your Brain, Thinking: Leaving the Lie, Thinking: Finding the Truth, and Feeding Your Soul.

Other sessions will be at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Saturday, following a vegetarian potluck buffet. Lectures will continue at the same times on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8.

There will be ample question and answer time. A $2 donation is suggested to cover handouts.

War teach-in

BRUNSWICK — A teach-in titled “Ten Years of War in Afghanistan, What Have We Learned?, What Can We Do?” will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Smith Auditorium, Sills Hall, Bowdoin College.

Speakers will be Elizabeth Gould and Paul Fitzgerald, authors of “Crossing Zero: the AfPak War at the Turning Point of American Empire.”

The panel will be made up of professor Allen Wells, history department; professor Nat Wheelwright, biology department; Dudley Hendrick, UM peace and reconciliation studies; and Lisa Savage of Code Pink Maine.

There will be audience participation.

Home care, hospice

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a free lunch and learn to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Home Care & Hospice Services” will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at CMMC, 12 High St., in conference room D.

Lisa Cailler will discuss the qualifications and reimbursement structures for home health services including nursing, physical and occupational therapy and personal care attendants. Patricia O’Brien will explain hospice services including how to know when it is time for these services. Advanced directives and how to access online resources will also be addressed.
