I was disappointed in the Sun Journal editorial regarding dogfighting (Sept. 16). “Feeding the dogfighter to the dogs” only expresses the public’s extreme anger toward those people. You would be hard put to find enough dogs depraved enough to do the job.
Dogs forgive we humans for our cruelties much quicker than our human friends would.
The real problem is not the laws but the enforcement. Michael Vick got a timeout and much-heralded return to his lucrative career for his participation.
These are dangerously depraved people who frequently also abuse children and other helpless humans. We need to view them as bullies and insist that the crimes be pursued as rigorously as any other type of assault.
In order for that to happen, people need to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious behavior.
Do we notice a dog that has injuries? Does a neighbor seem to have a lot of “fighting-type” dogs which he has to kennel separately? Are there strange cars poking about the neighborhood? People should take notice and write down license numbers. Do cars and dogs seem to congregate in out-of-the-way places? Has anyone heard anything suspicious of dog fighting?
The public will be responsible for solving this problem.
