NEW SHARON — A Eustis woman was seriously injured Wednesday night when her car struck a bull moose on Route 27, Franklin County Deputy Chris Chase said.
Jean Gutmann, 68, was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious head injuries, Chase said. Information on her condition was not being released by the hospital.
Her passenger in the 2010 Subaru sedan, Hugh Verrier, 79, also of Eustis, was not hurt, Chase said.
Gutmann was driving west at about 6:20 p.m. when a “humongous” bull moose walked onto the highway in front of her car, the deputy said.
“She never saw it,” he said.
Gutmann was taken by NorthStar ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and flown to Lewiston, he said.
Her car was demolished.
Chase estimated the moose weighed about 750 pounds. The carcass was given to Bob Meyer, owner of D.E.W. Animal Kingdom and Sanctuary in Mt. Vernon, to feed his animals, Chase said.
