UNITY — The Boston-based string band Joy Kills Sorrow, known for bringing a  modern sensibility to an old-world sound, will perform on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts.

While the group pays due homage to its bluegrass roots — its name is taken from WJKS, a radio station that broadcasted the Monroe Brothers’ show in the 1930s — it also plays more contemporary material.

Joy Kills Sorrow has a full arsenal of original songs that merge folk, rock, pop and jazz influences. The band’s music is dark and often funny, ruminating on modern life and love.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $15, may be purchased at the door or at www.unitymaine.org. There will be a jam session at 6:30 p.m. when audience members can bring musical instruments and play a bit with the artists. UCCPA is at 42 Depot St. For more information, call 948-7469.
