LEWISTON — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Safe Voices is hosting Standing Up, Speaking Out, a series of memorial vigils across the counties they serve. The goal of these vigils is to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, offer hope to those still facing abuse and support those who have survived domestic violence. All vigils will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3.

The Androscoggin County vigil will begin at Kennedy Park Gazebo in Lewiston and will include a short candlelit procession down Lisbon Street to Courthouse Plaza. Franklin County’s vigil begins at the gazebo in downtown Farmington, followed by a procession down Main Street to the University of Maine, Farmington, campus.

Oxford County will host two vigils, one at the Village Green in Dixfield, and a second at Moore Park Gazebo in South Paris.

Safe Voices is also partnering with the city of Auburn, Auburn Public Library and Central Maine Medical Center to light City Hall, the library and 60 High St., Lewiston, in purple, the color of domestic violence awareness, for the entire month of October. A banner featuring Safe Voices’ 24-hour helpline will be on display in Raymond Park, Lewiston. Franklin Memorial Hospital will feature a banner, flag and purple light display in Farmington.

The vigils on Oct. 3 are open to the public; anyone interested is encouraged to attend and show support.
