RUMFORD — Coach Jim Aylward’s plan is to look closely at those kids who need to be ready to take the next step in their development.

Mountain Valley provided those players with ample opportunities in a Campbell Conference tilt Friday night.

The Falcons delivered a message by scoring 27 points in the first quarter, including an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Kyle Duguay on the opening kick as the unbeaten Falcons rolled to a 54-0 victory over Gray-New Gloucester at Chet Bulger Field.

“We have four tough games coming up,”Aylward said. “We need to be prepared for them.”

Mountain Valley (4-0) provided the Homecoming crowd with plenty of excitement by scoring in a variety of ways. An onslaught has been a trademark of the River Valley team and this was another perfect example.

The Falcons shut out the Patriots, 55-0, last September.

“When I (received) the ball it was wide open,” Duguay said. “I thought this is great, so I cut right and ran untouched all the way. The team was able to stay focused on what we wanted to accomplish, but the penalties (eight) in the first half is a concern because we can’t be doing that against York next week.”

Gray-NG had trouble moving the ball and punted. Falcon quarterback Zach Radcliffe then threw a pass to an open Taylor Carey for a 13-0 lead.

Jacob Theriault followed by intercepting GNG quarterback Roman Latno and returning it 45 yards for a score.

Throughout the years, Mountain Valley’s strength was a dominating running game, and the current cast is no exception. Still, the runners rely on blocking and the offensive line paved the way.

“As a lineman, I need to stay focused and know my assignments,” Nate Nicols said, who also recovered fumble. “We needed to concentrate tonight and get the younger guys playing time, and we did that.”

Matt Hosie rushed for a 39-yard touchdown on his only carry.

Gray-New Gloucester (0-4) was held to minus-27 yards rushing in the first half and two of its three first downs resulted from encroachment flags by Mountain Valley. Jon Greenleaf was a two-way standoutand and Tyler Hicks recovered a fumble to halt the Falcons.

“That’s four wins,” Hamel said. “It qualifies us for the playoffs and that was a team goal. Now we can go for it all.”

In the second half, Mountain Valley received the kickoff and marched into Patriot territory, with Duguay breaking free for a 35-yard score.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, Colin Merrill broke out and scored. Izaak Mills then intercepted a pass and on the next play ran for a 21-yard touchdown. Mills and Glover each kicked three extra points.

“Coach said I was going to score some points tonight and he was true to his word,” Glover said. “The early lead helped and it allowed the younger players in. That’s what this program has been about.”
