Prekindergarten students from East Auburn Elementary School focus on a carrot that Jim Chandler picked from the school garden on Friday. Students began their fall harvest and will continue picking next week for their Maine Harvest Lunch on Thursday. The garden, built and funded by the school’s PTO, is a joint effort between the Auburn Land Lab and the school. The student’s lunch on Thursday will consist of bounty from the garden, but Chandler, the Land Lab director, will expand on that. “Maine Harvest Lunch is one day, but I turned it into a whole week because we have a garden to harvest,” he said. Edamame beans, potato/cabbage/carrot soup and Swiss chard slaw are among the dishes students will see on next week’s menu. A lone morning glory grows from a trellis as Jim Chandler gives prekindergarten students a tour of the school garden at East Auburn Elementary School on Friday. Students from Linda Fisher’s classroom picked gourds that will be used for table decoration during Thursday’s Maine Harvest Lunch in the school lunchroom. Chandler is the director of the Auburn Land Lab and the consulting teacher in science for Auburn schools.
