In Doug Rooks’ Sept. 18 column concerning same-day voter registration, he stated, “Even more impressive is that all signatures were gathered by volunteers.”

That is flat-out wrong.

Many groups, such as the Maine People’s Alliance, advertised online that it was paying people to collect signatures to place that question on the ballot. In fact, the Maine People’s Alliance had an army of full-time, paid staff at fairs, parades and going door to door throughout the state.

To wrongly claim that this is a “people’s effort” is, to say the least, misleading.

Even though Rooks’ column was in the Perspective section, one cannot, in good judgment, write and print inaccuracies.
