SCARBOROUGH — John E. McKinney, 93, of Scarborough, passed away Sept. 23.

He was born Jan. 26, 1918, the son of John G. and Mable Carmichael Mckinney, in Anniston, Ala.

He grew up in Anniston, attended local schools and graduated from Anniston High School, Class of 1939.

He served aboard the battleship USS Alabama as a first-class electrician during World War II. While the ship was anchored in Portland Harbor, he met the love of his life, Elaine Joyce. They married two weeks after meeting and were married for 67 years. She grew up on Swans Island.

He was an avid golfer and member of Willowdale Golf Club in Scarborough. He was a Shriner, member of Hiram Lodge No. 180, the American Legion and the VFW. He was retired from International Harvester Co. in Portland, where he worked as a bookkeeper for many years. He was also 100 percent disabled World War II veteran.

He is survived by his children, Roger McKinney of Portland, John McKinney and his wife, Camilla, Donald McKinney and his wife, Sheila, all of Cape Elizabeth; his daughter, Wendy Roberts of Holden; his grandchildren, Ellie Espling, her husband, Stephen, and children Scott, Anna, Lydia, and Seth of New Gloucester, Amy Abildgaard, her husband, Jason, and son, Gavin, of Windham,  Eric Carlsson and his children, Guinivere and Odin of Manchester, N.H., Lisa Travis and her husband, Brendan, and children, Emma and Julia, of South Portland, Paul Roberts and his wife, Ashley, of Bangor, Parker Roberts of Bangor, Benjamin McKinney of Cape Elizabeth, James McKinney of Cape Elizabeth and Anton Roberts of Holden.

He was predeceased by his wife Feb. 3; and his siblings.
