DEAR SUN SPOTS: Can you tell me what is going on with the gazebo in Kennedy Park? It has certainly has seen better days. I seem to remember that there was talk about restoring it to its former glory and that there may even be money set aside for it.

There is also some interest among people who would be interested in starting a group to support fundraising if necessary to save this structure. If there were to be such a group started, who could we talk to about our concerns and how to move forward with any plans we may have??

It would be sad for Lewiston to lose another important historical structure. Thank you, Sun Spots, for all you do. — No Name via email

ANSWER: Sun Spots had not received a response to her initial inquiry to Lewiston city government and was planning to follow up with another email when reporter Scott Taylor came to her rescue with a story on the gazebo in Monday’s (Sept. 26) Sun Journal.

In his story (sunjournal.com/city/story/1091827), Scott reports that the issue is going to be addressed at a City Council workshop at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27. He quotes Deputy City Administrator Phil Nadeau as outlining three options for the gazebo:

* Return the bandstand to its original glory at an estimated cost of more than $150,000

* Repair damage to the gazebo to make it safe

* Remove the structure altogether, possibly saving the dome

In his story, Scott also tells a bit about the history of the gazebo that readers might find interesting.

Nadeau said if the council decides to go for full restoration he’ll be looking for members of the community to take the lead on fundraising, so he will surely welcome your help. Interested readers might want to attend the meeting at City Hall, 27 Pine St.

According to the city’s website (www.ci.lewiston.me.us), you can reach Nadeau at 513-3000, Ext. 3201.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My uncle is Philip Bryant, the one featured in the story and video about the Vietnam veteran honored in Turner on July 4. The video was beautifully done. I was wondering if I could get a copy of the video for our family to treasure. I know it would mean a lot to my dad, Marshall and my uncle Dale. Thanks in advance for you help with this. — Marsha Hamilton, [email protected]

ANSWER: Sun Spots checked with Web Editor Pattie Reaves, who said that while the video will remain online permanently for your viewing pleasure, the Sun Journal does not offer videos for sale. (Sun Spots agrees that photographer Amber Waterman did a terrific job.)

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please print the address for letters to Dr Donahue?

Also, when the Sun Journal prints some pictures they are really large, but when they print photos of people half their faces are cut off so you can’t even tell what they look like. Why is that? — J.C.B., [email protected]

ANSWER: The address for Dr. Donahue is P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

As for photos, the Sun Journal strives to present photos in the best manner possible. Available space or the quality of photos sometimes determines their size, but the designers who lay out the pages do their best to make the photos appealing.
