BETHEL — A local third-grader was quick to volunteer his allowance money to help his best friend, but his mom suggested they do something bigger.

Matthew Thurston, an 8-year-old who should have been attending third grade with his friends, is spending his time at the Barbara Bush Childrens Hospital in Portland. He is recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash this August in Oxford on Route 26.

Thurston’s best friend, Wyatt Phielbar, wanted to do something to help his friend and working with his mother, Shannon Phielbar, and area residents they have organized a walk-a-thon for 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 in Bethel starting at the Crescent Park Elementary School.

“This is something for his classmates who wanted to help him out,” Fran Head, one of the organizers, said. “We are all doing this just for Matthew.”

Head said that Wyatt and his sister Jillian had wanted to give their allowances to help purchase things Thurston will need once he moves back home. That is when his mother, friends, local churches, youth groups and the schools decided to get involved and start the fundraiser.

“Area churches are helping to provide snacks and refreshments for after the event at the Crescent Park Elementary School in Bethel,” Head said. “Everyone is pulling for Matthew.”

Head added that Wyatt and Jillian have each raised more than $100 each for the event by having residents sponsor them. Donations can also be made at the event.

Thurston has already been given a ramp and wheelchair but other items are needed including a helmet and other expenses not covered by health insurance.

Anyone with questions or wanting to make donations is encouraged to contact Fran Head at 824-2114.
