OXFORD — In keeping with the American Legion values of Americanism and to help keep the post’s obligation to community, state and nation, Anderson-Staples Post 112 works with Oxford’s fire, police and EMT departments. The post recently met to recognize an individual’s commitment to his or her community and the American way of life.

Post Award chairman Joe Bernard explains the Post Awards and purpose as to why the awards are presented. “In today’s busy world, it is easy to lose sight of some of the blessings we have as a community and citizens,” he said. “How many times do we stop to think of the people who make our taxpayers dollars work to the fullest? Those whom we recognize for doing a good job are among the first to say, ‘No big deal, just doing my job like all the others,’ and are probably a little embarrassed or humbled to be recognized by their peers.”

Although it is difficult to pick just one for the awards, doing so also recognizes the departments in which they work and the support they get from fellow players within the departments.

The American Legion Certificate of Commendation is presented to the following men or women for outstanding service to the community through carrying out the duties of a firefighter, policeman or E.M.T. in a manner which reflects credit upon all the department’s personnel and for dedication to the profession above and beyond the call of duty: Oxford Firefighter of the Year, Gary Lizotte; Oxford Police Officer of the Year, Shawn Wood and Oxford EMT of the Year, Carl Van Nest.
