100 years ago, 1911

The home of Joseph Defosee in the four-story block at 16 Broad St., New Auburn, was placed under quarantine yesterday by the Auburn Board of Health. Both Mr. and Mrs. Defosee, it is understood, have a mild attack of smallpox. The local board took such steps as it thought best in the matter and today Dr. A. G. Young of Augusta and a member of the state board will come to Auburn and pass his opinion in regard to the case.

50 years ago, 1961

One of Lewiston’s newest and most modern filling stations, Joe’s Shell Service at Russell and Sabattus streets, celebrates its official opening Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week. Manager Joe Jemiolo formerly operated a filling station on the Maine Turnpike. The station will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week.

25 years ago, 1986

Edward Little High School has been notified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that Matthew S. Davis, Jane E. Libby and Clint W. Walker have been designated Commended Students in the 1987 National Merit Scholarship Program and will receive a letter of commendation in recognition of outstanding academic promise.

ELHS Principal Lawrence A LaBrie announced Friday that on the basis of performance on the qualifying test these seniors placed in the top 50,000 of more than 1 million participants.
