BETHEL — Rosalind “Rolly” R. Chapman, 93, died at her home on Eden Lane in Bethel on Monday, Sept. 26, following a long period of failing health.

Born in Bethel on May 27, 1918, she was the daughter of Herbert C. and Alice (Russell) Rowe. She was a graduate of Gould Academy and of Westbrook Junior College. She also attended the University of Maine, Orono. She married Franklin S. Chapman in Bethel on June 15, 1940, and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage, prior to his death on Feb. 12, 1999.

She was a homemaker and a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed spending time with friends and family including, over the years, numerous family dogs. As a youth she enjoyed sports and recalled with much fondness the years spent swimming and boating at her family’s camp at South Pond in Greenwood.

Her natural enthusiasm and curiosity led her to pursue various interests throughout her long life. She had a lifelong love of music and enjoyed playing the piano. She enjoyed numerous crafts and gardening and was an avid reader. She was particularly interested in local history. She was a charter member of the Bethel Historical Society and an active volunteer with the society for many years. In 1993, she received the Marjorie MacArthur Noll Volunteer Service Award. She was a 78-year member of the West Parish Congregational Church in Bethel and a past member of the Purity Chapter, O.E.S.

Mrs. Chapman is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Tammy) MacDormand of Gilead; a son, Jack A. Chapman of Bethel; two grandsons, Randall MacDormand of Burton and Kevin MacDormand of McMinville, Ore.; two great-grandsons; and three nieces, Margery Swan of South Paris, Mary-Jane Barlow of Burlington, Vt. and Betsy Goss of Bangor.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Herbert R. Rowe in 1986; and a son-in-law, Allister MacDormand in 2009.
