AUBURN — The victim of a Monday stabbing told police he confronted a New York man about an “altercation” with his brother over the previous weekend before he was attacked, police said in a sworn statement.

Police found Randy Doggett, 20, at Pierce and Walnut streets shortly after 10:30 a.m. with stab wounds to his upper back, shoulder, elbow and chest.

A witness told police that Doggett’s assailant had run up Walnut Street and into an apartment building. During an apartment by apartment search, police found Randall Wilson, 20, of Brooklyn hiding in a bathroom behind a shower curtain. He and DeShawn Best, identified by witnesses as being with Wilson during the attack, were handcuffed and taken into police custody.

In court papers, Doggett “admits to confronting two subjects about the dispute with his brother,” Lewiston police Detective James Theiss wrote. “Doggett also admits to telling them if they were going to ‘mess’ with his brother, they were going to have to ‘mess’ with him. Doggett elaborated that he was going to fight with them.”

Doggett said the two men told him to follow them up Walnut Street to distance themselves from a police patrol in the area. When they reached the corner of Walnut and Bartlett streets, Wilson (nicknamed “Spook”) revealed a knife. Doggett turned to run, but fell. While he was on the ground, Wilson stabbed him. Doggett got to his feet and ran toward Poirier’s Market on Walnut Street while Wilson and Best ran to the apartment building at 108 Walnut St., the affidavit said.

Doggett collapsed on the street, where police found him.

He was listed in stable condition Monday night at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston but was not listed as a patient Wednesday.

Wilson appeared in 8th District Court in Lewiston on Wednesday. He had been charged with elevated aggravated assault, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

His case was transferred to Androscoggin County Superior Court but likely will go to a grand jury next month before his arraignment.

Presented with a photo lineup, Doggett picked Wilson and, with less certainty, another man, as his assailant, police said. The witness picked out Wilson as the man who stabbed Doggett.

Wilson continued to be held at Androscoggin County Jail in lieu of $10,060 bail.
