OTISFIELD — A Waterford man was charged with burglary and violating his bail conditions this week for allegedly stealing a safe from a relative’s home.
Kevin S. Vezina II, 20, is accused of taking the safe from a relative’s home, according to a report by Trooper Thomas Welch of the Maine State Police. The safe contained $4,000 in cash, jewelry, coins and two guns, Welch said the owner told him.
Kenneth Thurston of Otisfield said the safe was stolen from his Bean Road home on Sept. 12. He said he suspected Vezina, who is his wife’s step-sister’s son, according to the report.
Vezina’s mother told Thurston she had heard her son and one of his friends bragging about taking the safe, the report said.
The trooper said Tuesday that he heard a Paris police officer running Vezina’s name during a traffic stop so he went there and told Vezina he and his friend were suspects in a burglary.
According to the statement, Vezina admitted his friend helped. He said he had more than $1,000 in fines from previous court matters and couldn’t find a job.
Vezina was arrested Monday and bail was set at $750 cash or a contract with Maine Pretrial Services. At his bail hearing Wednesday, Assistant District Attorney Richard Beauchesne said Vezina faced charges of operating after suspension and drug possession.
On Sept. 22, Vezina was charged with violation of bail conditions for having a knife.
Attorney John Jenness, who was representing Vezina, argued for a $100 bail.
Beauchesne argued $750 was fair as Vezina had been charged with multiple bail violations.
Included in his bail conditions are terms that he avoid contact with Thurston, the friend he said helped him steal the safe and his mother.
