At the present time in the orchard sections of Maine the gathering of the apple crop is occupying the attention of the orchardists. And some of them are deeply concerned as help is very scarce. Men are being paid as high as $2.50 per day. A man telephoned the other day asking for ten men to work in his orchard and could not get one.
50 years ago, 1961
An estimated 6,000 persons jammed into Auburn’s new Edward Little High School last night to hear Gov. John H. Reed compliment citizens of the city “for the forward step which you have taken to assure that adequate facilities are being provided for the young people of this city to obtain the finest education possible.”
Governor Reed spoke at the official dedication of the city’s new $1,700,000 high school.

Funding to begin a four-year degree program for Lewiston-Auburn is part of a budget request approved by University of Maine trustees Monday.
If the $1.8 million proposal is funded by the Legislature, the University of Southern Maine would offer a “modest four-year bachelor’s program” in the Twin Cities, Chancellor Robert L. Woodbury said. Courses would begin in September 1988.
