CANTON — Mavis C. Burnham Dowland, “MA”, 78, of the Victorian Villa, Canton, died on Wednesday, Sept. 28, with her loving family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Newry, May 1, 1933, to the late Lincoln and Hazel (Bucknam) Burnham. Mavis graduated from Stephens High School. She loved to read and shared that love by working as a literacy volunteer helping others to learn how to read.

Her favorite times were spent enjoying the company of family and friends, having cook-outs, playing cards, playing bingo and games like Scrabble and cribbage.

She is survived by her children, Barbara and Dale Stevens of Bethel, Edward Dowland of Augusta, Burton Dowland of Brockton Mass., Sharon Dowland of Lewiston, Diana Dowland and companion, Raymond Giger, of Bar Harbor, Brent and Maki Dowland of Japan, Peter and Tracy Dowland of Peru, Clancey and Amelia Dowland of Brockton, Mass., and Rodney and Laura Dowland of Vassalboro; close family friend, Donna Kenney of Standish; and 15 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; seven sisters; five brothers; and one son, Steven Dowland.

The family would like to thank the Victorian Villa and Beacon Hospice for their help in making for our angel’s peaceful passing.
