GREENWOOD — A man and woman remained hospitalized Friday night, a day after a van struck their car head-on on Route 26 in a downpour, Maine State Police Trooper Michael Smith said.

Driver Matthew Wallace, 33, and his front-seat passenger, Freja Folce, 29, both of Cumberland, suffered multiple injuries, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release.

Folce was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland and Wallace was in serious condition, a MMC spokesman said Friday night.

Folce’s daughter, Zoe, 9, sitting in the back seat of the Volvo, escaped with minor injuries, Smith said.

The van was driven by Corey Hill, 21, of Saugus, Mass., and registered to Twin Pines Construction of Boston, Mass., Smith said.

He said it appears that the northbound van crossed “the centerline to avoid a collision with another vehicle going in the same direction, lost control and went into the southbound lane,” hitting the car head-on, he said. There was a heavy downpour at the time, he said.

Hill had minor injuries, he said.

All four people were taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, with Hill and the girl being treated and released, he said.

The van and Folce’s car were demolished, he said.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday a short ways from Littlefield Beaches campground.

Smith said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, no charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing.
