LEWISTON — Bates College’s arts community will do its part to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Olin Arts Center this month with a family arts festival, a residency by New York City’s Asphalt Orchestra and a museum exhibit.

The festival, open to the public at no charge, will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the arts center, 75 Russell St. Activities include face-painting and balloon animals. Bates students will present visual art, music and dance. A barbecue lunch will be offered (free to the first 100 arrivals).

Among performers will be the high-intensity New Vaudeville Act Two and the avant-garde marching band Asphalt Orchestra, which will lead tours of the building and perform in concert. The art museum will be open.

Asphalt will perform in the Olin Concert Hall at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets are required. For more information, to RSVP for the barbecue or to reserve concert tickets, call 786-6135 or email olinarts@bates.edu.

The Bates Museum of Art exhibition “25: Selections from the Permanent Collection” will open on Friday, Oct. 14, and run through Dec. 17. Paul Cezanne, Mary Cassatt, Charlie Hewitt and Robert Indiana are among the many featured artists.

Other shows at the museum are “Manuel Alvarez Bravo: Fotografías de Mexico,” images by a leading figure in 20th-century photography and Mexican art; and “Tale Spinning: Enrique Chagoya, Leslie Dill, Brad Kahlhamer, Shirin Neshat, Nicky Nodjoumi, and Alison Saar,” a group of works presenting mysterious and provocative narratives that reflect the artists’ diverse backgrounds.

Besides the usual gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday (until 7 on Wednesday during the academic year), the museum will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. For more information, call 786-6158.

The avant-garde marching band Asphalt Orchestra will join other performers on Saturday, Oct. 8, as part of Bates College’s celebration of the 25 anniversary of the Olin Arts Center.
