I disagree with the Sun Journal editorial on banning cell phones for trucks (Sept. 28).

I have been driving tractor-trailers for 24 years now and have done cross-country and regional routes. The problem with going back to the old way of getting directions and help — you would have to get the phone companies to reinstall pay phones because there are no pay phones in any of the truck stops anymore. Also, most of the places we deliver to won’t let the drivers use their phones and have also taken pay phones out.

You can’t punish a whole industry just because of a few bad apples. There have also been times when a load cancels when the driver is en route. How would the company contact the driver? That happens a lot more these days than in the past.

I know when it’s safe to make or receive a call when I am driving.

If you want to ban cell-phone usage, it should be for everyone who is in a vehicle.

I run across countless cars and pickup trucks every day going 10-15 mph under the speed limit, swerving between lanes and almost hitting other vehicles because of cell phones.

Also, before making a statement such as the editorialist did, I feel that person should ride along in a big truck for a week and see what we have to deal with out there.
