FARMINGTON — Harvey D. Sabin, 66, a lifelong resident of Wilton, died, Sunday, Oct. 2, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends, after courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 19, 1945, in Wilton, the son of Grosvenor “Bill”and Rhoda (Towle) Sabin. He was a 1963 graduate of Wilton Academy and graduated from Southern Maine Vocational Institute with a degree in culinary arts in 1965.

Harvey served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1971, which included two tours Vietnam. After discharge, he was employed in various places as a chef and short order cook. On Feb. 14, 1997, in Farmington, he married his wife of 14 years, Laurilyn Welch Mills of Jay and they made their home in Wilton. He lived with his former wife, Cyndee Tucker on Isle Au Haut on the coast of Maine.

He was employed as a master electrician at G.H. Bass Co. and later at various manufacturing facilities and construction projects. He was a lifetime member of the AmVets Post 33 and Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 in Jay and a member of the American Legion Post 117 in Wilton. Harvey served as commander of the VFW in Jay from 1998 to 1999 and adjutant of the AmVets.

Harvey’s greatest traits were instilled in children, which included friendliness, affection and love of animals. He was a devoted husband, father and friend and will be missed by those who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Laurilyn Sabin of Wilton; his son, Jonathan Downing and his wife, Shelby and their children, Emma and Evan of Carrabassett Valley; Jonathan’s mother, Linda Downing of Auburn; his daughter, Amanda Berry and her husband, Todd, of Washington Plantation; his brother, Steven Sabin and his wife, Christine, of Wilton; his stepchildren, Waman Mills of East Dixfield and Bernadette Mills Luncsford of Kansas City, Mo.; and stepgrandchildren, Michelle and Allen Bence, Darby Sabin, Tresden Mills and Camille and Emmiline Luncsford.

He was predeceased by his parents.
